You will be taught Contemporary Therapeutic Pilates.
We create individualised Pilates Method movement programs for all bodies and all experience levels, using all the classical Pilates apparatus, including the Reformer, Tower, Cadillac/Trapeze Table, Chair, and more.
Each session offers a high level of personalised guidance with sessions ranging from Private (1:1) and Duet (2:1) to Semi-Private (4:1) settings.
our method
Our teachings are governed by the guiding principles of the Pilates Method, modern exercise science, and biomechanics.
You will work within your own personalised movement program, alongside truly commited Pilates Enthusiasts, and with real-time modifications or additions offered by your practitioner to address how your body presents on the day.
Breath · Concentration · Centering · Control · Precision · Flow · Alignment · Commitment
These are the principles of the Pilates Method that underpin our teaching. We practice them because they provide, in our experience, the most effective framework for creating lasting change in how a person moves, feels, and functions.
As you practice in our studio, these movement concepts begin to make sense in your own body, supporting you to a greater awareness, intention, and purpose. As you begin to move with greater ease leading to a more efficient, effortless, and pain-free way of moving, and a higher sense of wellbeing through.

our background
Pilates Lab Phillip Island is a Contemporary and Therapeutic Boutique Pilates Studio in the heart of Cowes, Phillip Island.
Pilates Lab Phillip Island opened its physical studio in Cowes in early 2024, following several years of evolution. Originally established in North East Melbourne, the studio operated online during the pandemic before relocating to Phillip Island post-COVID—first as a home studio, and later growing into its current dedicated space.
Pilates Lab is the result of over a decade of teaching across contemporary Pilates studios, rehabilitation clinics, and allied health settings in Melbourne, combined with a lifelong engagement with movement, athletic performance, and a deep interest in the human body and biomechanics.
Founded and led by Maja Lund Loekkegaard, Pilates Lab is shaped by a background that bridges high-level athleticism, science, and the performing arts. Maja began her professional life as an elite equestrian athlete, training horses and competing internationally in show jumping. After stepping away from competitive sport, she followed a path into science and academia, completing advanced research in human assistive robotics, while remaining deeply physically active through dance, freediving, surfing, and long-distance running.
Later, while working in the European tech sector, Maja performed part-time with a Danish dance collective, training daily in classical ballet, contemporary, and fusion dance styles. Pilates was already a foundational part of her training—essential for maintaining resilience, strength, and longevity in a maturing, high-performing body.
A planned transition into full-time dance training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London was interrupted by family circumstances in Australia, prompting a return and a shift in direction. Maja undertook a full-time Therapeutic Pilates Diploma and began working within a Pilates and Exercise Physiology clinic in Melbourne. This period deepened her focus on movement analysis, technique refinement, and working with both high-performing and complex bodies.
During this time, Maja experienced a life-altering birth injury, resulting in severe pelvic and musculoskeletal trauma and several years of disability. Struggling to find help with a proper diagnosis or rehabilitation Maja managed to restore her capacity to move again through her own research and Pilates practice.
These struggles inspired a deeper understanding of how female bodies adapt through life stages, and how movement capacity and load tolerance are influenced by the endocrine, neurological, and neuromuscular systems—both in healthy physiology and in more complex or disordered bodies.
From this came a clear studio vision: a Therapeutic and Contemporary Pilates Method Studio that delivers exceptional movement training while also supporting rehabilitation and progressive conditioning for bodies with specialist needs.
Today, Pilates Lab supports a wide community of movers, from athletes and experienced practitioners to those living with hypermobility, EDS-related presentations, neurological conditions, persistent pain, and other complex musculoskeletal or hormonally-influenced disorders.
The studio exists to protect long-term movement potential. It offers a place where bodies can rehabilitate from injury, restore strength, increase mobility, rebuild proprioception and coordination, and progress confidently — supported by thoughtful, sustainable, high-quality movement training.
Here, the Pilates method is taught as it was intended: precise, intelligent, adaptable, and progressive. And the studio’s greater purpose remains anchored in the belief that every body deserves movement that is wholesome, intentional, empowering, and unique to the individual.
